Welcome to the 7th International Equitation Science Conference

Ises 2011 teams up with 11th Global Dressage Forum and is preceded by a Popular Equitation Science Day

Popular Equitation Science Day 26th October ISES conference 26th - 29thOctober GDF 30th – 31st October 2011

What is ISES

The International Society for Equitation Science (ISES) is a professional organisation devoted to the scientific study of equestrianism.

Equitation Science – The application of scientific methods to assess the welfare of horses undergoing training.

The Society’s mission is to encourage the application of objective research and advanced practice to
improve the training and welfare of horses in their associations with humans.
ISES provides an international forum in which scientists & veterinarians alike communicate their recent findings by organising scientific meetings and by encouraging scientific publications. Furthermore, the Society offers a pool of expertise to national governments, international bodies, industry and equine welfare organisations.

Facilitating research into the training and welfare
of horses worldwide

ISES Aims

  • Encourage and support research into the training and welfare of horses.
  • Provide an international forum for communicating scientific results by organising meetings and by encouraging scientific publications.
  • Encourage links between applied animal behaviour science, veterinary science, psychology and other disciplines.
  • Encourage and support the teaching of equitation science in academic institutions such as veterinary schools, departments of animal science, laboratory, companion or captive animals, animal production, agricultural colleges.
  • Provide a pool of expertise to national and international governments, industry and to equine welfare organisations which deal with problems involving equine behaviour, training and welfare.
  • Encourage the assimilation of scientific knowledge so as to facilitate its use in relation to practical problems concerning horse training and management

ISES Conferences

International conferences serve as a platform where the latest scientific results into the training and welfare of horses are communicated and discussed. It is a meeting place for academics and non-academics to link science with practice.
During the conferences, (plenary) orals and poster sessions are held, along with practical demonstrations addressing various topics in horse training. The ISES conference will be organised the days before the Global Dressage Forum (GDF).

Due to the high level of interest of (international) riders, trainers, equine behaviour councillors etc. the ISES 2011 Local Conference Organising Committee has decided to precede the conference by a “Popular Equitation Science Day”.

Popular Equitation Science Day

(October 26th , 2011)
Speakers of the main conference will present a more popular and practical version of their contribution at the main conference. Also a representative of ISES will present the main focus areas of ISES. Most contributions will also include a practical demonstration. This day is open for those interested in the science behind the art of horse riding.

ISES 2011 Conference

(October 26th - 29th , 2011)
Theme: Equitation science: Principles and Practices - science at work
ISES 2011 will include two days of presentations of most recent scientific research results.
The following renowned scientists have accepted to deliver a Plenary Presentation:
  • Prof. Daniel Mills (Lincoln University) – Equine Abnormal Behaviour
  • Prof René van Weeren (Utrecht University) – Advanced scientific measurements in Hyperflexion research
  • Prof Hillary Clayton ( Michigan University - McPhail Centre) – Advanced scientific measurements in oral cavity (bit, rein, noseband influences)

Delegates are invited to present their work covering the following themes: Understanding Equine Behaviour; Equine based parameters; Human – Horse interactions; Motivation of horse and rider.

ISES + GDF 2011 practical day

(October 29th , 2011)
The theme of the practical day is: Science meets top sport. The practical day will be organised in close contact with the FEI, GDF, ISES and several international trainers and riders. The primary aim of this joined day is to stimulate participants to exchange ideas about how scientific research can help to improve the welfare, performance and safety of the horse in cooperation with man.
NB This practical day is only open for participants either registered for the main ISES conference or for the Global Dressage Forum

Global Dressage Forum

(October 30th - 31th , 2011)
The Global Dressage Forum is the leading public debating platform for the international dressage world. Since October 2001 top trainers, riders, officials, equestrian jounalists and serious dressage enthusiasts from around the globe meet here annualy.

The ISES 2011 Local Conference Organising Committee would like to invite you for either:
  • the Popular Equitation Science Day (October 26th 2011)
  • main ISES 2011 conference with the joint GDF Practical day (October 26th – 29th , 2011)
  • Global Dressage Forum (October 30th – 31th , 2011)

There will be a good offer to visit any combination of these events
